Nicholas Stern held a keynote at Forest Day 4, to the challenge of making REDD+ work, against the backdrop that everyone wants a REDD+ agreement by the end of the week, and under the assumption that negotiators will succeed.
He painted a picture where we have several big goals including dealing with both climate change and poverty. REDD+ is, in his view, about both.
He emphasized that wise use of avilable resources effective mitigation efforts will be necessary to sustain the project, the finances and the general commitment at all levels.
Such efforts must to a large extent be in agriculture, reducing the pressure for taking up new land, and reducing the pressure on natural resources in general. He took livestock management as a particularly evident example.
Further, he characterised REDD+ as a development project, and one that must be succesful also in fighting poverty.
Well said, I think.

Det är uppenbart att framgång i REDD+ kommer i hög grad att bero på förändringar inom jordbruket, se t.ex. här. [...]
